Carbohydrate and protein producing plants are of great importance for food. In addition, many species of protein-producing plants (ie. Legumes) have root nodules containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria which can improve soil fertility, while some carbohydrate-producing plants are important resources for industry.
Within five years the inventory and study will be concentrated on Caesalpinaceae, Mimosaceae, Dioscoreaceae, Marantaceae, and some members of Arecaceae (ie. Metroxylon sago).
